Although probably not the center of attention of the room, clean blinds on your windows add personality to your room. Clean window coverings add charm, but dirty blinds can give the room a grimy touch.
While blinds definitely don’t need a daily cleaning, it is a good idea to check up on them every few weeks. If you notice dust or buildup, follow these guidelines to give them their fresh clean glow again.
Wood Blinds / Shutters
Start with any layers of dust that may be camping on the wood surface. There are a few ways of removing the dust. You can use a static cloth like a Swiffer cloth, so that the dust is trapped in the cloth instead of being free to fall on the floor. You can also use a damp rag to trap the dust. Just make sure you don’t douse the wood with water, or else you risk damaging the wood.
After you’ve finished removing the dust, give the wood a little shine with some wood solution like orange glo or orange oil. This will help keep the wood young, supple, and radiant.
Fabric Window Coverings
For roman shades and curtains, remove the curtains from the rod. Check the fabric and any instructions for special directions. If they are a common low maintenance material such as cotton, they can likely be washed on a delicate cycle in cold water. Allow them to air or hang dry to void shrinkage from the dryer. Then touch them up with a low heat iron or steamer to remove any wrinkles.
For more delicate fabrics such as silk, or curtains with backing, etc, take them to a qualified dry cleaner that offers this type of service.
Windows
Since the window coverings are already down, this is great opportunity to clean the windows for an extra bright shine. Window cleaner and a rag does the job on the inside. Cleaning solution and a squeegee can make fairly quick work of the exterior.
